The battle took place on 1982. The result of the Falklands War was the invasion of Argentine forces of the British-owned Falkland Islands. A remote UK colony located in the South Atlantic. On April 2, 1982, Argentina’s military forces landed in the Falklands, and captured the islands two days later. At a time of economic crisis, Argentina hoped to reclaim the sovereignty of the islands. The UK chose to fight as it had ruled the islands for 150 years. The 1,800 Falklands were “of British tradition and stock” said Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. As a result, a task force was sent to take back the islands, 8,000 miles away. The starting of the conflict began at sea between the Royal Navy and the Argentine Air Force. By June 14 the Argentine occupiers surrendered. In the conflict that happened, 255 British and 655 Argentine servicemen lost their lives, along with three Falkland Islanders.
The UK task force had 28,000 troops and more than 100 ships in total. Where Argentina had 12,000 soldiers on the Falklands and 40 vessels. The Argentine cruiser sank on May 2 which was the first major loss of life. General Belgrano and the loss of 368 crew members. Just two days later, the British destroyer, HMS Sheffield, was hit by a missile and sank. 20 crew members lost.
